What is it about polka dots that make me instantly want to pair them with yellow? They just seem right together. Or maybe I'm just into yellow lately, so everything seems right with yellow. That's strange for me to say because growing up my mom said her favorite color was yellow, and my 6 year old self cringed and judged in disgust of her choice. Didn't she know yellow Starbursts and yellow gummi bears were the worst in the bunch? Blech.
Also, a year ago I thought yellow was a color I couldn't pull off. Turns out there are a lot of different shades of yellow (duh, but...yeah) and while one shade may not look good, others totally work! I just had to keep an open mind until I found the shades that worked for me. And it turns out, yellow Starbursts are aiight. Yellow gummi bears are still gross, though, FYI. Is there a color you think you can't pull off?

Yellow is my color that I CANNOT pull off. I keep trying it and getting different shades and tones of it but I can't look good in it. I think it's because I am so white.

Totally cute! The yellow is so perfect with polka dots!
ReplyDeletethat looks so beautiful! light yellow and navy blue are a wonderful combo! And I'd love to have a dotted skirt like this too!

Yellow is the color that I can't pull off. That and orange. I'm so pale that that the "cool" colors just tend to look much better on me. But you look great, and I love the polka dot skirt!
ReplyDeleteI love this outfit- It is perfect for work! I am adding these pieces to my shopping list!
ReplyDeleteYellow is tough for a lot of people, I think, but you look great in it! Certain pastels don't really do much for me. I tend to look better jewel tones.
ReplyDeleteLoving this look my dear. I still need to master the twisty belt thing.
ReplyDeleteI've always had a weakness for polka dots. Or, is that obsession? I'd love to have this skirt too. It's very cute with the yellow, being complementary colors and all.
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question, I rarely wear yellow, red or purple. No real aversion, I just tend towards neutral and warm colors.
Wow! You look good on this outfit. Chic and sexy at the same time. Nice ensemble.

Audrey, I love your blog! I think it is super eco-friendly to focus on working your own closet, re-mixing, and re-wearing. And it doesn't hurt that you are so pretty and stylin, of course. I write a blog all about eco-fashion, so reading yours made me so happy. Following on Bloglovin right now!

Buuuugh, my banged up knee is toootally ruining my chance to wear the new polka dot pencil skirt I found when I went home... And thanks a heap, now I crave wearing it more.
ReplyDeleteBTW, yellow is so cheerful on you, glad you made the decision to give it a whirl. Pink and I are not friends, because I don't like it and because my skin has such strong pink undertones. Matchy-matchy is not a good look.
I think you might be subconsciously pairing them up because of that one one song where "she wore an itsy bitsy teeny weeny YELLOW POLKA DOT bikini..." !!
ReplyDeleteLove polka dots! Especially with yellow ;) I love the way you styled your belt too!
ReplyDeleteI love this polka dot and yellow combo - it's just such a fun and playful combo.

I love this outfit (and all of your outfits, for that matter)! The yellow and navy look wonderful together :)
ReplyDeleteI love mustard yellow, but I am very pale and it looks horrible next to my face. I've had to resign myself to admiring how it looks on other people (I'm not brave enough for mustard pants or a mustard skirt).
That polka dot skirt is so pretty and looks amazing with the yellow belt and cardi! Found you at The Pleated Poppy and following on GFC!

Ok, this is my favorite outfit from you! This is so cute and you look great in yellow. I look awful in brown since I am so fair skinned. Heather
ReplyDeleteit wasn't until recently that i thought i couldn't pull off reds since i'm a redhead, but it turns out i can pull off like one or two certain shades
ReplyDeleteAudrey, this is awesome! Another look that you've absolutely nailed, and I'm absolutely pinning to re-create later. ;)
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome pencil skirt...I totally love the yellow paired with black/white! Somehow sunny yellow nad polka dots just makes for the most cheery and feminine combination.

Love it. So fun to have the yellow pop with the dotted skirt, and this shade looks good on you! I've always been a little scared of red - time to find my shade perhaps...
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely adorable! I love navy and yellow together. And polka dots are popping up everywhere...gotta get me some.
ReplyDeleteYellow is a super fun color and it looks so nice with navy! I like how you tied your belt i can never seem to get mine like that, any tips?
ReplyDeleteThanks,

I always want to pair polka dots with red! I just have to be careful not to make it come off as Miney Mouse-y. Unless, of course, I'm going to Disney. :)
ReplyDeleteI love your little belt art here. Adorable. Frames the waist very nicely.

You look fab! Yellow is a great color on you! Funny how we associate childhood memories with choices we make now!!
ReplyDeleteSuper cute outfit! I love the color combo.
ReplyDeleteCute! I love polka dots and yellow. I need some of each in my closet. :) I'm not convinced I look super great in yellow though. And orange is the one color I really think I would have a hard time pulling off, even though there are some shades of it I really like.
ReplyDeletelove how you paired this! my next outfit post on my blog has this same color palette! i'm going to link to you to show another way to wear yellow and navy and white polka dots :)

Love this cheery combo! Just scored a yellow cardi for my bday (love the sister-in-law!) and have a polka dot dress I could use. Only problem is...I need to replace it's zipper. Bummer. Nevertheless, will def be trying this look soon!
ReplyDeleteBecause of my pale skin and ginger hair, I really don't feel I can pull off reds and pinks. I know that is the stereo-typical assumption made by all gingers, but I've tried. It just doesn't work for me. However, this yellow does look great on you!
ReplyDeletehttp://domesticatedworkingwoman.blogspot.com
Yellow gummi bears ARE the worst. As are any yellow candies. yuck.
ReplyDeleteI totally avoided yellow clothing until recently, too! I'm still not too big of a fan of pastel yellow or neon yellow, but mustard yellow? LOVE.
Maybe it's the 'itsy bitsy teeny weenie yellow polka dot bikini' song drawing you to pair dots and yellow... ;) Or maybe not.
ReplyDeleteI used to think I couldn't wear orange, but now have one piece of an orange stripped sweater that I love!
ReplyDeleteLindsay @LindsayJEveryday.blogspot.com
Brown. I don't know if it's that I don't think I can pull it off or if it's that I just don't like it much. Shoes are fine or as an accent, yeah. But just a brown shirt or something? I can never do it.
ReplyDeleteYou look great in yellow!
I think having dark hair really helps when it comes to wearing yellow. You always have the best way of putting together outfits.
ReplyDeletelove the combo of the polka dots with the yellow,
ReplyDeletesometimes i think i can't pull of red. but i think it depends on the undertone of the red, if it is a blue undertone or orange undertone.

I love wearing sunny yellows - they always make me so happy. I have a hard time with mustards they do not look good on my skin tone.
ReplyDeleteYellow & navy is one of my favorite combos! You look adorable!

Orange. Can NOT pull that off...I'm a redhead with a lot of pink/red tones in my face, so orange is not something I can pull off in a top. Peachy oranges are ok if they're on a bottom, but I stay far away from bright oranges...cute, but not for me!
ReplyDeleteSeriously drooling over that polka-dotted pencil skirt! That's like all the things I LOVE in one article of clothing. Yellow Starbursts are the worst, ha!
ReplyDeleteperfectly priya
I absolutely love this outfit!!! I love yellow starbursts :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute outfit, it's just perfect! My daughter's name is Audrey too!
ReplyDeleteYellow and polka dots: So happy togetherrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!
ReplyDeleteon a subconcious level maybe you were thinking... itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini..
ReplyDeleteEverything looks good on you. great work young lady. i have dresses with princess/empire cut but not sure i can pull up skirts like that. feels weird. do you have cowboy boots? would like to see what you do with them. mine are basic brown with cute stitching but your young, so colored boots would look great on you. also...do you shop thrift stores? upcycle and save $$$
ReplyDeleteNo, I love the yellow gummi bears *and* yellow starbursts!
ReplyDeleteGreat color combo. Yellow is one I, too, thought I couldn't wear, until I discovered other shades. Yay for yellow! Ha :)
ReplyDeleteOooh, I love the yellow and the polka dots, but then I've always liked yellow and polka dots so not really a surprise.
ReplyDeleteI can't pull off light greens or turquoise...well not next to my face at least, I could in a skirt or pants. I used to be able to wear every color but then I had kids :) But they're totally worth the decrease in color options :)
I love the cheerful polka dots of your skirt pared with your cardigan and belt! I love wearing color, so there aren't many colors I stay away from.
ReplyDeleteHa ha, for some reason I want to pair polka dots with yellow too! :) This outfit is just so chic! LOVE it! That pencil skirt fits you like a glove!

love the way you're wearing your polka dot skirt! the yellow just pops out and it complements it so well!

Love your outfit Audrey! I'm wanting to incorporate some yellow into my wardrobe. You've inspired me! Hopping over from WIWW!

Hi, I found your blog through Pinterest and now am a follower! The color I have the most difficult time wearing? Red. If I can wear red, then it must be only one shade of that color, because I have tried and tried. It just tends pull out the red patches of my skin in the wrong places and makes me look blotchy. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh! i have that skirt and shoes just like yours. i wore this skirt, those shoes, with a flowy yellow top. but i am LOVING this yellow cardigan with the white shirt AND am loving the belt. i will totally be copying! :)
