Clean Out

Dress: Target (similar #1, similar #2)  |  Cargo vest: Old Navy (similar)  |  Wedges: Target  |  Belt: H&M

I clean out my closet every few months, but right now I'm doing a major clean out, and it's sad.  Now that I'm more than a year into blogging I feel like I have a good handle on what kinds of pieces I want in my closet.  That's good news.  The sad part is that I have a ton of clothes staring me in the face that were mistakes I made along the way, especially early on.  Perfectly good clothes that just aren't for me.  Sigggghhh.

If I can ever get my butt into gear, I will list them online so that they can find a better home.  I'm curious, how often do you guys clean out your closets?

I love a good closet clean! I didn one back in june, at the start of summer :) I go through my closet at least 3 times a year. It helps me keep everything neat and helps building a working closet! x

  2. I just found your blog a couple of days ago, and I can't tell you how much your post inspire me to take a good look at my wardrobe! A co-worker and I were talking the day before I found your blog about how we wished we had tips on putting outfits together and then we found you!

I try to clean out my closet once a year (and sometimes sporadically as well, if I buy something that prompts me to think about culling some of my existing stuff).

  5. I've been lazy about my closet lately, but I used to use the rule of one new thing replaces one old thing. So if I bought a new shirt, I'd have to get rid of an old one. That's mostly because I over shop sometimes and my drawers were too full. haha! I haven't used that rule in a long time.

  7. I just discovered your blog and I am in love. Putting layered versatile outfits together has always kind of overwhelmed me but you make it seem so simple. Thank you for all the great ideas! :)

  8. I just discovered your blog and I love how you show the versatility of each piece of clothing. I recently did that on my blog vodkdainfusedlemonade.wordpress.com with a white oxford/boyfriend shirt. Thanks for the inspiration. Good luck with the closet cleaning. I'm starting to get much better at not buying pieces that I won't wear. I'm slowly learning what works for me and what I shouldn't even bother with. Good luck,

    Agi:)

  9. I clean out my closet about every 2-3 months. I have a rule that if I haven't worn it in 6-8 months I need to put it aside and if I don't wear it within a few weeks from that point it will be given away. Good luck on your clean out. It feels good to start fresh and address anything you "need" after a clean out :)

  10. I do a major clean out twice a year and then sporadically in between. We have a place here called Clothes Mentor where I take my clothes (like a Buffalo Exchange but target market skews older and I find they pay better). I'm too lazy to try to sell them online. Anything they don't take I donate or give to my sister if she wants them.

  11. I am SO terrible with parting with my clothes, even if I have worn them in years...I always think it may come back into style and one day I'll want to wear it again.

  13. Clothes Mentor sounds awesome. I loathe Buffalo Exchange--been rejected one too many times for my fragile ego! Haha

  14. I feel that way too! But I can't get rid of them!!! Love this vest - almost wore mine over a dress today and now I wish I had! http://forlaurenandlauren.blogspot.com/

  15. Listing them online is super easy with either Poshmark (if you have an iPhone) or Because I Shop Too Much! I've sold several things via both and it's so simple.

I did a major closet purge last summer and then again when we moved this summer. But I keep finding things that I just don't LOVE and that don't really fit how my style is evolving. It's an on-going process.

  17. I wanted you to know that I found your blog via Pinterest, and you are the first (and only!) style blog I have EVER found that makes me feel like this is totally do-able. I feel like I'm fashion backward, and I wear very drab boring clothes a LOT (I'm an attorney and work in an office - we wear LOTS of grey around here). You have inspired me and I hate to admit how much money I've spent the last 24 hours trying to get staple pieces, inspired by you. You are amazing and I am now excited again about trying to put ME together!

By the way, I haven't cleaned out my closet in a LONG time... but I think you may have actually inspired me to work on it. But the problem is that you have now made me think I can make a lot more of my pieces work - so it will take a while to really clean house!

Thank you again. You are amazing.

  18. I just did a major closet clean out and then went on a shopping trip for my birthday and filled it back up! Here's the clean out- http://marikocreations.blogspot.com/2012/08/cleaning-and-organizing.html

  19. I like to clean out my closet every few months, I just hate clutter. My rule is if I haven't wore it in a year its gone. I try to usually give the clothes to someone in need at my church or just donate them to thrift stores. I tried to sell some on ebay, it was more of a headache then anything else. Great blog, keep up the great work. God bless!!

  20. I try to clean out at least twice a year. I love that dress on you, so, so cute with the vest!

  21. Multiple times a year, maybe even once a month ? I seem to continually get rid of more stuff, which is a great feeling because I'm getting rid of unneeded clutter and donating to charity at the same time !

  22. Every fall and spring when I switch out my cooler/warmer clothes, I try to get rid of a few things. Like if I pull something out of storage and I'm not at all excited to see it, I'm probably not going to wear it! And if I'm getting ready to put something away and I realized I didn't even wear it all season, maybe it's not worth hanging onto. GOOD LUCK with your clean out!!!

  23. I recently cleaned my closet too, probably got rid of things I should have kept... Like that patterned skirt I didn't know how to wear. Seriously, I found your blog a week after I got rid of things. I'd love to see what you decide to get rid of and maybe you could share why it doesn't work, could save all of us from repeating that mistake.

  24. Really cute vest! I should probably clean out my closet more often. I feel like I never have clothes to get rid of since I wear them till they have holes in them! haha...

  25. I just cleaned out my closet too! I do it every few months. This time I'm taking all my old clothes back to my home town of Red Bluff and donating them to all the families who lost their homes in the fires up there.

  26. I need to clean out my closet but I just can't bring myself to do it! I hate to get rid of stuff I may wear someday (ha!) even though I know I won't were it.

  27. I can relate to that feeling. I purge my closet gradually through out a given season typically. When I'm ready to donate, sell or swap, I grab a few things out of the purge pile.

  28. I had a good weekly routine of every Friday was donation drop-off day and Saturday was recycling drop-off day. Now that I've started a new job, I've gotten off schedule. Like you I want to sell online those items that were "purchasing mistakes" but haven't done it yet. BTW love the cargo vest you wearing. If that's not a keeper, I'll be glad to take it off your hands. Hint, Hint.

  29. You look adorable! I wish that I had bought that vest. I also have SO many clothing mistakes in my closet. I am working on it.

I rarely clean out my closet though it needs a serious weeding. I was going through part of my hanging tops last night and found at least 5 tops that still had tags on it that no longer fits me. I also found a lot of clothes that have tags on it that I purchased at least a year ago!

  31. I feel you - I do my cleanouts pretty frequently, and somehow there's always stuff to get rid of. I try to be happy that I'm coming into my own and getting a strong sense of my own style, rather than feeling guilty for having all these "mistakes" in the closet... but even though I always vow to buy only things I absolutely love in the future, it still happens. Sigh. I do still love the cleanouts though - so satisfying.

p.s. that vest: CLEARLY never going to be a mistake staring you in the face. Looks so good with everything!

  32. i clean out mine so frequently, but then end up buying the same amount i throw away so still have no space! i have a thrift store weakness so i usually end up with way too much stuff.

  33. I clean out my closet *constantly*. If I wear something, and I'm not crazy about the way it feels or fits, it goes the next time I wash it. So it's a constant process.

  34. I clean out my closet after every summer and winter. Getting rid of anything I didn't wear that season. For the past 3 years I have been having a "Ladies Swap Meet" to swap clothes with all my friends. Even though we are all different shapes and sizes it works. Anything that doesn't get "swapped" goes to a local thrift store that supports hospice care in the area.

  35. If you want to sell any accessories I'm looking to buy a "lot" of accessories (rather than 1 piece at a time). Looking for the staples: chunky necklaces, chunky bracelets and bangles, belts. Do you have any tips about where to buy these items as a "lot"? OR where they can be found inexpensive and a massive selection in one place? Haven't had luck with ebay.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thank you! I'm starting out with ZERO accessories (I've only worn stud earrings forever) so it's too overwhelming to go searching for one piece at a time at a million different stores. Will check out Forever 21 at the mall today - let me know if you if you have any other mall store suggestions! :)

  37. I really try to keep up with it every season change, but that doesn't always happen... at least twice a year.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm trying to clean out my closet right now, but find myself paralyzed at the thought of getting rid of something I MIGHT wear in the future....how do you know when it's time to let something go?

    ReplyDelete
  39. I second this idea! I think it would be great (if you still have the clothes) to show what DOESN'T work, and how you realized/figured it out.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm cleaning out my closet right now before I move in with my boyfriend to an apartment with one closet (I'm a little scared since I feel like such a clothes hoarder!). You should consider donating your clothes! Goodwill does great work or if they're work appropriate there are charities that accept work clothing for use by women who have job interviews and can't afford work appropriate clothing (some homeless, some low income).

  41. I go through about every month and sell "mistake" pieces to buy/trade consignment shops when the items are in season. (they only buy in season/trendy pieces) I do have a pile that has been rejected from them that has been staring me in the face- no motivation to post online yet I guess.

I also love your blog! I just discovered it 2 days ago and you have lovely taste and style! :) I didnt think I wanted a bubble necklace until I saw you rock it with several different outfits. I will be watching for your future posts!

  42. I try to purge my closet every season. That way, if I haven't worn something in over a year or if I'm not excited to wear it, I get rid of it. My friends and I do clothing swaps 3 or 4 times a year, which is always fun. A great excuse to drink wine and play dress-up. Plus, it makes me feel better about getting rid of things when I know that someone will be excited to wear them. Selling them online is a great idea, too!
