After reading the survey responses it was evident that wider questions about wardrobes were begging to be addressed. I wanted to squish them all into a neatly packaged series, but it got overwhelming so I decided to scrap the Work Your Closet series idea and turn it into a regular part of this blog. That way, we can cover topics like closet organization, finding your style, shopping for your body type, etc. over the long haul.
Today, I really want to start the posts on building a remixable wardrobe. Again, I'm not an expert. Remixing doesn't come naturally to me and I had to learn it (and am still learning). These are just some things I've learned so far.
Intro
What is "remixing"?
First of all, let's clarify the lingo. "Remixing" is basically another term for mixing-and-matching your clothes to use the same pieces to create a variety of different outfits. I think it was made popular by Kendi, who hosts a 30-for-30 remix challenge in which you create 30 different outfits using only 30 articles of clothing.
When I first tried to participate in a 30-for-30 before I had this blog was when I realized I had created a closet full of one-hit wonders. Like I wrote before, I basically had no concept of how to use one piece in more than one way, and even when I tried I didn't have the right pieces in my wardrobe to be able to do it.
3 Things I Needed to Learn
I was determined to figure it out, and after much closet analysis and studying people who did it well (aka stalking Kendi's blog like a creeper) I realized I needed to do a few things:
- Be able to reimagine garments and not just take them as is.
- Learn to shop for pieces that could be versatile.
- Add the right pieces that would serve as building blocks to create foundation for mixing and matching.
Besides unpacking each of those 3 things, I'll eventually talk about learning how to put the pieces together with accessorizing, layering, etc.
Reimagining Clothes
When I talk about reimagining clothes, I'm not even talking about crazy things like using dresses as skirts or altering a garment or anything like that. (Not yet, anyway.) I'm talking about simple things. I had such a limited view of a garment that the way I saw it on the rack was the only way I understood I could wear it. What I learned from my stalking escapade was that I had more control of the clothes than I thought, even without alterations.
Warning: This all might sound really dumb or obvious to some of you, especially if you've been reading style blogs for a while, but this is where I started! And I know that others are starting here too. :)
Shirts
Okay...for example, I only ever wore this shirt like this:
I never wore it with anything but skinny jeans because, since it was flowy and not fitted, it created a weird silhouette with a skirt. Then I realized you could tuck almost any shirt into a skirt, and voila! New outfit possibilities!
Can you believe I stopped wearing skirts because I couldn't find shirts that fit with the skirts? To think, all it took was a little tucking! Here's another example:
Other things I learned you could do with shirts are to belt, tie, or partially tuck them. I wouldn't have bought this shirt because it's a little baggy and long, but after using those tricks, I can do a lot with this shirt.
Update 9/7/12 - I'm adding this pic below because the impression many people were getting was that reimagining tops is all about belting. Admittedly, many of these looks utilize belts, but there are other things you can do. Also, please check the rest of the Building a Remixable Wardrobe for ideas that do NOT require belts. :)
Top c/o Daisy Rae Boutique (shop)
Pants
I also learned I could roll up pant legs. I generally avoided rolling my pants for fear of cutting off my leg line and making my legs look shorter. Sometimes that happens, so it doesn't work. But sometimes, if I roll the pant leg at the right width, it works and adds a cute dimension to the whole outfit. It's all about experimenting!
Besides adding some dimension to my outfit, rolling my pant legs was important was because it opened up more shoe options. For instance, my beloved booties before rolling and after:
The booties looked funny with jeans, so I may have never worn them with pants. Rolling up the legs made it work! Other outfits where I roll my pant legs: (1, 2, 3)
And, don't even get me started again on how rolling up the legs revived this pair of jeans!
Cardigans
Like I said in a recent post, I learned I could wear a belt over a cardigan to give my outfit some shape. Here is the outfit with and without a belt:
What a difference, right?!
You can also button the cardigan first and then belt it:
Again, it's just about experimenting, and the point is that you have more control over the clothes than you think!
Dresses
I tend to buy dresses with defined waistlines and therefore I never thought to wear a belt with them. Why bother, when the shape was built into the dress? But style blogs taught me that adding a belt anyway can change the look of the dress to make it more versatile. (Sorry, I didn't have time to take pics of that, but if you flip through my dresses label you can find a billion posts of me in dresses and belts, and often the same dress remixed.)
Adding a belt to a dress can also anchor the look:
This dress already has a built-in waist line, but it wasn't strong enough to combat the bagginess the cardigan created. Adding a belt anchors the outfit and pulls the look together.
Belts
Lastly, after all this talk about belts, I should say that I didn't own a belt before reading style blogs. I always bought pants that fit such that I didn't need a belt. Also, a belt typically used around my hips to hold up my pants would be way too long when used on my waist and excess belt would be hanging out like so:
It seriously sounds so silly that I never knew what to do with the excess. I didn't know I could just tuck it in place, so I never wore belts because I thought I had to get two different sizes of every belt--one for my waist and one for my hips. Finally, I discovered you could do a lot of different things with the excess belt:
(I made up all these terms, so they might only make sense to me...)
Anyway, just experiment. Don't take a garment at face value. Don't disregard an item because it's too baggy or too long. Play around with clothes and see if you can make them work for different scenarios. As you can tell, there are a LOT of options you can use to make a garment work for you!
On deck for next week, Part 2 of Building a Remixable Wardrobe: Shopping for versatile pieces. Until then, go play with your clothes!
A Note on Belts for Plus Sized Wearers - Update 9/15/12
I also want to add that many women have commented and emailed saying that belts do not work for them because of their larger frames. PLEASE do not discount yourself from being able to wear belts because of your size--that makes me sad to hear because it does not have to be true! If you need visual proof that belts might work for you as a plus sized wearer, please check out this guest post on Tips for Belting Your Curves. Also, check out two beautiful and stylish bloggers who have larger frames than me: Hems for Her and Animated Cardigan. I'm not saying it'll work for everyone, I'm just saying to give it a shot because you might be surprised.
Also, please keep in mind that belting is *not* the only way to give your wardrobe versatility. There are four other parts to this series for you to check out below that don't involve belting, and some can be done regardless of your size or shape.

Great tips, Audrey! Only since I started reading Kendi's blog have I begun tucking in my shirts and belting my longer cardigans. For lack of a better phrase, it's almost life-changing!
ReplyDeleteLove this! Def. gonna use these tips :)

I seriously love this post! I have been trying to figure out other ways to wear my bagging button downs. I also opt for belted and I was wondering if the partially tucked look was ok. I'm glad to see it is and I love the tied look too! Oh and the belts. I'm definitely trying those. I can't say enough good things about this! Thank you :)
ReplyDeleteWow... this post is so "enlightening" :) I enjoyed it and have learnt a thing or two. Right now, I am very much at the stage you were before- not being able to look at the mutiple ways to wear my tops. You have written the tips in such a way that newbies like me get it! Awesome Audrey! thanks again!
ReplyDeleteAwesome post, Audrey. You nailed every point.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think I need some new fun belts...
What an awesome post. All hail the belt! It especially made a HUGE difference with that yellow skirt/gray blouse combo. Without a belt, it's blah and shapeless, and with, it's a totally amazing outfit!

This is a great article! Once per month I compile a list of my favorite inspiring links about fashion/crafts/photography/food and publish it to my blog. I posted the February edition just this morning, but this post of yours will be on the top of my March list for sure. It will be published on March 16. I know that is a month away, but hopefully it will get a few more readers your way!
ReplyDeletelove this post girl! my faves are tucking a shirt into skirt and wearing belt over it.. and i love your collage of ways to wear belt!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE this post! so many good ideas and advice!
ReplyDeleteReally Great Tips. I've been learning to that with my clothes too. Especially layering tops and shirts that don't look good by themselves. As a result I get more wear out of them. I also got into the business of cuffing my pants when I almost threw a pair of jeans away that just didn't fit right anymore.

Wow, thanks Aubree!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE THIS! Keeping writing about remixing PLEASE PLEASE! I too needed to figure out different ways to wear my clothes and I recently also discovered tucking and belts...so easy, why didn't I think about it before! Can't wait to read your shopping for versatile pieces, I need help with this!
ReplyDeleteI love all the ways you styled the belt with tuck and knot!! very nice! Thanks for this post!!

This post? SO HELPFUL. In the very beginning process of re-imagining my wardrobe, and these are some good starting ideas. :) Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis is fabulous. I love seeing the how different an outfit can look with a little change. Great!
ReplyDeleteI love this, so many great ideas!
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome post! Great advice for everyone :)
ReplyDeleteOh my word I love your blog. I just came across it today from Lilly's Style and what a great post for me to start with! I have been focusing a lot on refreshing my look. I think a lot has to do with turning 30 at the end of year and trying to feel more put together but still fashionable. I just wanted to tell you I love your blog and I'm adding you to my blog reader right now. I can't wait to read through some archives!
ReplyDeleteI love this post! Im serious this is one of my favorite blogs! I love how you showed what a difference rolling a pair of jeans can make!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! Thanks so much for taking the time to show us all these great ways to remix and spruce up what we already have in our closet! Gold star for you! ;)

loving this! I've been learning these tricks lately too, and it's opened my eyes so much! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAll great ideas! and magically all of your changes flatter your body!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant. Just brilliant! You packed so many great tips into this post and now I've got all sorts of new wardrobe possibilites dancing through my head. I can't wait to read more!!
ReplyDeletewow!!! so informative! I too am learning about mixing and matching! thank you!
ReplyDeleteI've been reading style blogs for a little over a year now, and while I have a better sense of my own style, I still feel like I have trouble remixing outfits. To be honest, when I initially read the title of your post, I thought to myself, "Oh great, another blogger who is going to write about remixing." But the way you actually broke it down and gave pictures of EXACTLY how to remix is something I really appreciate. Thanks for the great post!
ReplyDeleteWonderful post! I learned soany of these same things from blogging. Such great ideas for stretching your closeted looking polished.
ReplyDeleteHaha "enlightening"--nice. Thanks for the feedback, Aparna. It's helpful for me to know what is and isn't helpful for others so that I can write better posts in the future!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Nicole! That's really sweet and kind of you! If you have time would you mind emailing me about what problems you run into about shopping for versatile pieces? That might help me focus the next post more. If you don't have time, don't worry about it. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear that, Amanda!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Janessa! I love Lilly's Style. I think I had similar feelings to you when I turned 28. I work with a lot of college students so I'm roaming college campuses, etc, but I didn't want my style to LOOK like a college student anymore! I started following style blogs to refresh my look too.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sarah! About the other posts you've read on remixing, what were they like or what did they talk about? It'd be helpful for me to know what wasn't helpful so that I can be more helpful for you guys! :)
ReplyDeleteWOW! NICE POST! I LIKE THE BELT SECTION
ReplyDeletewww.aroundlucia.comwww.aroundlucia.com
A million times THANK YOU! This made things very clear! Okay, I can't say it's completely crystal clear yet because now I have to go look at MY wardrobe in a new way to see if I get it, but this post (actually, your whole site - your writing and your pictures) is so helpful!
ReplyDeleteI have to revisit the belts; last year I bought a bunch of plain-jane belts that I have found don't work with my body shape. I'll put some thinner, cuter ones on the next shopping list!
Thank you! Especially for the part about the belt.
ReplyDeleteThis is a GREAT post. Thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteFantastic post! Great job.
ReplyDeleteI've said this before on a few posts, but this time I am way serious...this is my favorite! I am totally bookmarking this for future reminders. Love the belt info!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome!
ReplyDeleteYour tips are so great! It's amazing how a little refashioning and experimenting can change the whole look of a clothing item. Having this in mind makes thrift shopping so much less daunting because you can really see the potential of items.
ReplyDeleteI really love this post! I feel like you took everything in my mind that I was confused on and made sense of it. I have just recently began to follow fashion blogs and began to take some of the advice I am finding. I have been remixing things these past few weeks and loving how far my closet has come. I like you only wore one-hit-wonder outfits and kept buying more and more outfits. Now I just buy staple pieces or search for classics at thrift stores too. Its so much more fun being creative and your post hit the nail on the head. I love the tuck your shirt into the skirt portion and the belt ideas. Keep it up.

Great post!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this post! I've been reading your blog for some time now, but didn't really know where to start in my own closet. I appreciate you starting with the basics as well, because I'm one of those people that need it. I've tried a few of your suggestions with some of my outfits (like belting over a cardigan, and tucking in where I've always left untucked) and I can't believe the difference it's made! I've even been asked if I've lost weight (which I haven't), just because I'm wearing my clothes right now. So thank you!!
ReplyDeleteI never wear a belt! I needed some inspiration Audrey! I'm doing a Valentine's Day linkup! Post on What do you love, who you love, who loves you, or what love means to you? I hope you can be a part of it! Have a great day honey! Kori xoxo

wish you were here to see all the light bulbs you just set off, great series my dear! Can't wait for more :)
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I've been following Kendi's 30-for-30 over the past year and I must say I learned a lot of these same tips. It seems so common sense after the fact and I'm definitely a different shopper than I used to be (plus my belt collection has grown exponentially). Your ideas are all great and I love your style!
ReplyDeleteI soooooo needed this post. Thanks for all the tips. Excellent!
ReplyDeleteI totally love this post- I'm glad you didn't not write it because it seemed too basic- I needed to hear it:) I love how you show the before and after looks. You are adorable- I'm a new follow:)
ReplyDeletelove all of these ideas..i just hate that tucked in shirts look TERRIBLE on me. it always makes me look pregnant because i carry all my extra weight in my stomach.
ReplyDeleteThis is such an awesome and informative post! Thanks for taking the time to write it up and inspire us all :)
ReplyDeleteWow, such a great post - I love all the great tips!

love your yellow skirt. I also love the partial tuck with skinny jeans :)

I stumbled across your blog from a link on Pinterest and I am SOOO glad that I did! I recently had a baby and am feeling a bit "blah" with what I have in my closet. I find myself wanting to go out shopping and get a whole new wardrobe, but that just isn't practical. I've always been one to wear a shirt and jeans, but now I'm off to pull all my clothes out of my closet to figure out what I can re-mix. Thank you!!
ReplyDeletegreat tips audrey!! and cant wait to see what you post this week, remixing is definitely how i get through my closet without screaming that i have nothing to wear although i have been known to do that on occasion. hope you had a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteLove the remixes! And what great and simple ideas to take an item and put some pizazz in it! Thanks, Audrey!
ReplyDeleteI just started blogging and came across your blog from Mama Loves Papa! I am very inspired by your story and am looking forward to hearing more!
ReplyDeleteI learned lots of these things from a few years of following style blogs too - but always good to have a reminder to go back through my wardrobe with an eye to more reimagining... My real remaining issue though is to remember all of this when I'm SHOPPING - but it sounds like that's an upcoming post :)
ReplyDeleteThis post was really helpful when I went clothes shopping the other day, to try to focus on pieces that could be used in more than one way. Thanks. I appreciated and needed the tips you gave on wearing belts and how to change pieces up a bit. I'm learning to think about creating "outfits" instead of wearing a top and pants. :)
ReplyDeleteYour collection is so Nice and lovely and you are looking to gorgeous on all the garments, outfit is too great... thank you for sharing with us.... keep posting..
ReplyDeleteComprehensive and well thought out, Audrey! I love seeing you break it down this way.
ReplyDeletelove all of these ideas..i just hate that tucked in shirts look
ReplyDeleteTERRIBLE on me. it always makes me look pregnant because i carry all my
extra weight in my stomach.

I adore this post! I always used to wonder how to wear a belt if it was just a tad too long! I hated the floppy tail at the end!
ReplyDeleteFound your blog through Tammy at Lemons, Avocados, and the Bay! New follower here. :) New follower here! Sam

Wow. Thanks SO much for the tips! I'm adding you to my RSS reader right now!!
ReplyDeleteI've found your blog so helpful, thank you! I totally didn't know the belt thing either so had two types of belts! I've been wearing all my hips belt around my waist now and I love it!! You've brought out the crafty side in me and I've even started my own blog :) I'm following and I'm sure I'll be linking back to many of your posts because they're awesome :)

Thank you so much for this! You have inspired me to change my wardrobe starting with whats already in my closet!
ReplyDeleteYay! I'm glad to hear that. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for being so honest and open about your wardrobe dilemma. I thought I was the only one that bought "one hit wonders" and couldn't figure out why I still had nothing to wear. Keep it coming!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for this post, especially the 'before and after' pictures. I am going to use these examples to play with my wardrobe. Very inspiring.
ReplyDeleteNice pics.I have just bookmarked this page so I don’t miss
ReplyDeleteany more of these.
Thansk for this post. All the pics are superb.
ReplyDeleteWish I’d found this blog earlier. Some really great
posts.Very interesting. I hadn’t thought of some of these things before.
Thanks.
Very interesting. I hadn’t thought of some of these
ReplyDeleteInteresting piece. It can be difficult to find good blogs nowadays. Found one
here though by the looks of things.
Informative post. You have managed & compile really
ReplyDeletea unique & real information. Its really very helpful for
us. You've made some great points and it’s written really well.
Really cool post, highly informative and professionally written..Good Job
ReplyDeleteIt's like.. the more you throw in, the more angry it gets.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I am inspired :)
ReplyDeletebtw, you and all your looks are adorable!
I just discovered your blog. This whole series on Putting a Wardrobe together and re-mixing clothes is just great. I have been trying to learn how to do this better. Your before-after pictures and showing one outfit different ways are so helpful. Like so many others, I tended to wear outfits just one way and I also had too many print tops. I am looking forward to learning more about accessories.
ReplyDeleteYou are adorable. Thanks so much for all the tips!! It SEEMS simple, but it is NOT. Thanks again!!
ReplyDeleteI came across your blog by accident, and I am so glad I did. I too have been avoiding skirts cause I can't find shirts that fit - I will try the tucking. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteSo SO helpful. I'm pretty much at the fashion 100 (as in before 101) level and love this simple advice with pics. I can't wait to try it out. I too wasn't a belt girl. Besides the fact that I always buy pants that fit fine without it, I hate having to untie a belt to go to the bathroom. Sometimes I rush to the toilet barely making it in time....let alone with a belt! Eek. Still gonna try it though.
ReplyDeletethis was excellent information
ReplyDeleteOK, so obviously I need some cute belts! Thanks so much for all these tips! And for stopping by my place to share the link with me! Off to read more! :)
ReplyDeletea friend of mine referred me to your blog and i have really learned a lot! but everyone knows that some styles just dont work for bigger girls (like me), i am wondering if you have a blog that would be appropriate for that?
ReplyDeleteBrilliant ideas!!...
ReplyDeleteThese are simple but great ideas,Thanks for sharing your tips!
ReplyDeleteOk, this is like the best blog EVERRRRR! I found something of yours pinned on Pinterest and I just LOVE your site! I am currently looking for maternity wardrobe that is mix & match in order to save money. Pregnant belly or not, I think all of your ideas make sense! :)
ReplyDeleteI found this on pinterest and love that you put all these ideas in a post together :) I use a lot of these to expand my wardrobe or add interest to an outfit! You are also super cute :)

ReplyDeleteSo great. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain some fashion tips to a hopeless homeschooler like me! ;)
ReplyDeleteSo brilliant!
ReplyDeleteFound you on pinterest too and am also in middle of doing a similar wardrobe work-over. It's amazing how much there is to learn. Between you and Stacy and Clinton on What Not to Wear, I might stand a chance.
ReplyDeleteOMG you are too cute. This is a GREAT post (found via pinterest obvs!) and you are talking about so many things that I have only figured out since I got into style blogging. Does a girl wonders doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteThank you. Inspiring:)
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! I am a shortie too so I'm very inspired to try the pants rolling and belting since I have zero torso space. :) Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHeу there аre using Wordρress for your blog platform?

Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteThese tips DO work for bigger girls. I've seen plenty of big girls belting their dresses and cardigans - using a belt to define your waistline can make you look slimmer. Also I know I personally tend to go for big cardigans and flowy shirts since they are my comfort clothes, but they end up looking frumpy - belting a dress underneath the cardigan allows for a less frumpy look, and if you have an issue with your belly or hips, you can wear a looser fitting or A-line skirt that flows over those areas and still tuck your shirt in. Check out the Fatshionista flickr group to see examples of these tips in action on big girls.
ReplyDeleteGet a skirt that flows loosely over your belly, like an A-line or pleated skirt,a nd then tuck your shirt in. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is kind of awesome. But I'll admit, belts scare me - mostly because I'm rather...gifted...up top with a short torso, and it always looks to me like they're sitting on the belt....with a little something extra rolling out below the belt. Tips?
ReplyDeletei love what you did with clothes but i also loved what you shared about your self
ReplyDeleteYou know this seems like such a simple/no brainer kind of thing... BUT after reading this post I tried it with one of my outfits and it's crazy how much better it looks! I can't believe I hadn't done it before with that outfit! Thanks for the idea :)
ReplyDeleteunreal! this is fantastic!!!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree! I am totally creative except when it comes to clothes, but I have hope!
ReplyDeleteLove your post!! You've inspired me to do a little re-imagining, re-mixing...and to buy me some belts!!

Entering from pinterest also. Loooooove this entry! You made it so easy I had to say duh to myself... why did I never get this?? Actually going into my closet to play with my clothes before I read part 2! THANKS!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm something of a natural remixer by necessity. My wardrobe isn't huge, which can be vexing, but it's led me to be more creative and use what I have to my best advantage. I've also learned that one accessory can make all the difference. For instance, the simple edition of a waist belt, which came with a dress I bought, opened up a whole world of new looks and has led me even to reassess my style. The conclusion: It's time for a style overhaul! So with remixing (especially the 30-30 challenge and re-imagining clothes), practicality, and a concrete (though flexible) game-plan in mind, I'm setting out on my own style journey.
ReplyDeletePS I found you through Pinterest, and enjoyed your post very much. It's encouraging to see someone living within their wardrobe rather than pining for a dream.
I love this post. I really struggle to spend money on things like accessories and shoes (black and brown dominate my shoes and belts) but you've shown me that a few inexpensive pieces might make a big difference in my very plain very frumpy wardrobe. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis is great! Thanks for sharing. I wish there was a "you" for plus sized girls.
ReplyDeleteGreat article!!! My rule for a wardrobe with endless possibilities is that each article has to go with 2 other pieces, not just one. e.g when I purchase any kind of top, it has to go with at least 2 bottoms (a skirt & a pants, 2 skirts, etc.) Same with bottoms, each one has to go with at least 2 tops (top & blazer, 2 tops, etc). Accessories and reimagining an article of clothing expands my wardrobe that much more. You can get by with very few articles of clothing by following this rule.
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas, thank you! I really enjoyed reading your blog, and you are adorable too!
ReplyDeletefound u on pinterest! amazing ideas thanks so much! will do much better with my clothes!
ReplyDeletei have close to no style sense and this was one of the best blogs i've ever seen! going to explore the rest of your site now :)
ReplyDeleteamazing!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI am loving loving loving your blog. I am such a visual girl, and having all your photos is phenomenal!!! Now if only you could do all this remixing (with photos!) for plus size ladies! Everything looks so cute on you, but some of us choose to down play / up play some of our features... Or are there any other blogs you'd recommend that are like that? (Showing photos of wardrobe combos for larger ladies?)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Shlee! I don't know if you saw Hannah's Makeover (Hannah's Style Makeover, pt. 1) but she's a bit bigger than me. She's not super plus sized, but she was teetering on the line, and I wrote some tips about how to balance her body in particular. Another blog I love for plus sized bloggers is this one: http://www.hemsforher.com
ReplyDeleteI love your blog so far! I love that you have pictures. You are seriously giving me details on things I could never figure out and gave up on! I felt so dumb, but to see you explaining, and know that others have a hard time too with something that seemed simple like wearing a belt around a dress is encouraging! I love it!
ReplyDeleteI just stumbled upon your blog on Pinterest, looooove it! I just posted the link to this post on my FB fan page for my readers to enjoy! Thanks for the time & effort put into it :)
ReplyDeletebreezydaysblog.blogspot.com
I want to reinvent my style and your blog will be my reference point. I have an apple shape body and today's clothes are designed for size 2. so it is hard to find decent outfits. Just like Shlee, I am a visual person and need to see it to like it. Thanks for your lovely blog.
ReplyDeleteGreat Blog. Super helpful
ReplyDeleteDear heavens. You kept saying, "this might sound dumb/obvious" and every time I thought, "OH MY GOSH!!!! Why haven't I been doing this?" Seriously, this blog is going to be an absolute life-saver as I continue to lose weight and have to restock my closet. Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteI just found you this past week and I. LOVE. YOU!!!! I have a closet full of clothes that I never wear. I put my kidlets to bed and spent an hour re-imagining my wardrobe. I had to write everything down, but I came up with some nice outfits from pieces I never wear. Thank you so much for keeping it simple and easy to follow. You have given me new confidence!!!
ReplyDeleteThis post is genius and exactly what I needed! I am a total newbie at thinking of stylish outfits. I don't own belts for the same reasons you didn't! I never thought about tucking baggy shirts into things - I always wondered why they would sell something so shapeless! Ha! Thank you!!!!
ReplyDeleteI guess I need a big cool belt!
ReplyDeleteNot necessarily! Read the rest of the series. :)
ReplyDeleteMeg,
ReplyDeleteBelting works better for some than for others...for those of us who are curvier (and short torsoed) it often winds up making us look even stubbier in the torso and adds thickness (who wants that?). What I do when I want a belted look is use a scarf. Use a scarf that isn't too thick...something with good drape...as a belt. You can use a long skinny scarf or for a more dramatic look (that can be very slimming when done right), use a large, triangular scarf and tie it at an angle (waist to hip); wear this over slim or full pants for a Spanish flair or over a full skirt for something a bit more "peasant".
Also, placing the knot in the right place is important (often off center is better than dead center).
I was so inspired by your blog today. I decided to hit some stores and test my ability to find "remixes". Guess where I got the best finds..? My local Goodwill store, which as it turns out had a boatload of brand new Target stuff donated to it right from Target themselves. I had a major haul, 4 dresses, 3 shirts, a skirt. One of my shirts was a striped jersey St. John, originally sold for $150...awesome with a belt!! Found a mix of patterns and tones, but all fully mix-n-matchable, fitting structure & scenario requirements. I overhauled a few old belts (I've lost 35 lbs recently after baby so I have a mix of too big and just a little too small belts) and worked them in. Before,
ReplyDelete90% of my wardrobe was a very non-cohesive set of one-hits. Or so I thought. I went through it today and found about 12 totally new combinations (I only had 30 minutes to look, then my 2 year old demanded my attention - but I am confident I will find more the next time I tackle it!)
Thank you so much for your inspiration, as a losing-weight new mom I really needed help getting back confident & in style and I think I'm finally there!!!
Erin, this makes me so happy! First of all, a Goodwill that sells brand new Target stuff sounds like heaven. How cool that you found so many new outfits. But how much more amazing that you are getting back to feeling confident and in style!!!
ReplyDeleteWow!!! that was so helpful Thank you very much!! you are very pretty, i am def using your tips!
ReplyDeleteYour remixable wardrobe series is amazing! Thank you so much!
ReplyDeletelove, love, love!!! Great blog!! Thanks soo much!
ReplyDeleteYou are awesome! I love all your looks but especially the belted grey cardigan over the yellow pencil skirt, tall socks and boots!!! So cute!!
ReplyDeleteOMG this is what I needed. You're speaking right to my level. I can look at style blogs all day but it's such a big leap from where I'm at that it doesn't make sense. Thanks I'm going to sit down and read your whole blog when I get home tonight!
ReplyDeleteHaha, so glad to hear that Sarah! Good luck with building your wardrobe!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog!!!
ReplyDeleteWe need this information especially because the economy is not cool!
Re inventing our wardrobe can give us a lift when we can not go shopping.
May I suggest something?
Having a Naked Lady party.....not what you may think.
We have our community of women come together for a few hours and if you want to attend you have to bring 5-10+ items (clothing or household) that you do not want any longer. (These have to be in good condition) We place all items rummage sale style and we exchange.
This is a great way to get new stuff and hang out with friends/women of the community!

I'm so glad that I found your blog! I'm going to devour this series!
ReplyDeleteThanks for putting this together with pics. I appreciate the work you put into this. Like others when you start saying, "this might seem obvious..." Nope, not here, in fact I could never figure it out so thanks! I think we have similar body types and build and I always see outfits on tall super thin people and cannot figure out how that would look on a real person so seeing your take on clothes is really helpful too. I put my notes in Evernote for my next shopping trip! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYou are a bit of a clothing genius! Love how just some simple things make your outfits polished. Perfect! :D
ReplyDeleteSo glad I found your blog. I'll be coming back for more!!!!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE every single one of your outfits! They are perfect for everyday casual wear without looking like I've completely changed my wardrobe. Thank you SO much for all of your posts! Will you post what you get when you go shopping so that we have the option to get your great finds??
ReplyDeleteI just found this blog courtesy of moneysavingmom, and it is amazing! I'm so guilty of the solid top, solid pant=boring outfit combo and I'm ready to make my wardrobe more mixable! I've just become a mom of two under 2, so I need easy pieces that all go together, and your blog is going to help me accomplish this. So excited to use it to transform my current wardrobe, and advise me in acquiring new items, especially accessories. Thank you so much!!! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is so helpful. Something I need to do more often. I have so many clothes and always feel the need to add more to my wardrobe, when all I have to do is make my pieces interchangeable. Your blog is great! I just stumbled upon it today.
ReplyDeleteThis is very helpful! thank you
ReplyDeleteOMG AUDREY. I just noticed you linked to me! You are the sweetest, and you're absolutely right--belting is for everyone, not just average sized women!
ReplyDeletePlease post more! I love it!
ReplyDeletewow thank you for teaching me I could hopefully changing me out of my black/blue/t-shirt/blue jeans only life! we shall see!
ReplyDeleteThank you!! I was reading through this post, loving what I was seeing and getting excited to rethink my wardrobe, when it hit me- "I'm a size 16... I can't do these things." :( I was literally thinking, "How can I find a style blog for larger ladies that is actually good???" And then you did it- you put in those lovely little links and made my day!!! Thank you for addressing this issue, because it is really frustrating for those of us who are not a size 2 who still want to dress fashionably. My favorite part of this post? Seeing those boyfriend jeans- I wear mine probably way too much, but I always get compliments when I go out in them with heels!! ;)
ReplyDeleteI have a question. Can plus size girls pull off skinny jeans and tall boots? I have tried and not sure. Haven't found many pics.
ReplyDeleteI'm basically in love with your blog. I just found it through Pinterest and you might have changed my life a little bit. Keep up the good work!

Hi, I read your series and found it really encouraging. I used to try mixing and matching, but I stopped because I had this problem that all outfit combinations look okay to me, but some of them looked bad to almost everyone else, bad fashion sense I guess! Can you give me any advice?

ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to the excess belt issue, what I do is get different colors of ponytail holders to match the color of the belts. Slide the right color on at the the side without the buckle before you buckle it. then you can slide it to the end of the excess and it holds it right in place and goes unnoticeable. :)
