An Investment

Polka Dot Top: Old Navy  |  Army Vest: Old Navy (shop)  |  Jeans: Gap  |  Boots: Target (shop)  |  Tote: eBags (shop)  |  Necklace: Lulus.com  |  Bracelet: Thailand

I hope you all had wonderful times ringing in the new year!  I don't have a sparkly NYE outfit to show you because B and I opted out of parties and bars to have a chill evening at home with steak dinner and a movie.  I have no regrets.

Instead, here's an outfit from the earlier in the weekend.  My husband gave this tote to me for Christmas.  I'm on the go a lot or traveling, so I often have quite a load to carry, but the previous totes I've used have been inexpensive and couldn't cut it.  Since I broke a record in discovering new ways you could break a tote, B decided around my birthday last year that it was time to invest in a quality tote for me.  He had my friends pitch in for one as a birthday present, but when I found out how much it cost I couldn't bare the thought the money could have been used on so many other things.  I made him return it.

But for the next few months I kept mentioning how my bags were breaking, and B regretted returning that tote ever since my birthday.  He insisted that I let him give me a good tote for Christmas, and here it is.  This is well made and the leather is buttery, and I believe it'll last for a while.  As much as I kick and scream about it, sometimes you do just have to invest in quality.  I'm learning!

  1. Yes you do. I've learnt that the hard way too especially with handbags. Shoes and Bags are what I splurge on. Years ago I wouldn't have imagined spending more than $40 but now I can spend over $100 on a quality bag or pair of shoes. And I stick with Old Navy, Target and Macys etc for clothes.

  5. Super cute bag! I hope it holds up. I spent $115 on a bag one time and it started falling a part :( but that's probably because I lug the kiddos stuff around.

  9. Love it! I am also learning about quality....you'll spend more on cheap bags over the years than you would have on one bag that will last you all those years! So hard to swallow at the time, but worth it in the end. It's gorgeous!

  11. Love the ways you wear this vest so much that I went out and bought it for myself (in caramel color) at Old Navy... for $4.00-- what a steal! Thanks for the inspiration :)

  12. I hear you on the money spent on cheap bags over the long haul vs. one good bag.  I argue with myself about it all the time.  The hardest part for me is, "What if I spend $100 on this one thing but it ends up not being good quality?"  I guess I need to get a better handle on what good craftsmanship really feels like.

It's true!  As hard as it is the plop that money down, sometimes you just have to do it.  And really, it will likely save you money in the long run.  PLUS? The bag is so pretttty!

  19. Love the tote! I've been wanting to invest in a nice bag for a while as I'm in the same situation - one really good bag would probably cost the same and last the same amount of time as the 5 Target versions I've gone through. I just always feel so much pressure when picking out an investment piece because I feel like it needs to be THE one... I think yours will be classic and go with everything though!

  21. I'm having the same issues myself. I have some Nordstrom gift cards that I could combine and buy a gorgeous purse, but then I think of all the other (smaller) items I could buy with the same amount- and I'm torn.
Thanks for the advice, a good handbag (or tote) is worth the investment!
You look darling, love the polka dots!

I have that vest in a tan color, and it's one of my favorite pieces. I love it in green too, now that I'm seeing yours!
