Indecision

Dress: Banana Republic  |  Jacket: Forever 21 (shop)  |  Boots: Dolce Vita via Macy's  |  Brown tights: Old Navy

Question time!  How long does it typically take you to decide that you're going to get rid of something in your closet?  Every week or so my husband names a handful of items that he's planning to rid his closet of, and it seems like he decides it all in 30 seconds.  His minimalist tendencies keep his closet pretty trim already, so sometimes I worry that he'll very soon have no clothes.

Wearing this dress made me ask the question because I was (and maybe still am) <--this--> close to getting rid of this dress because this shade of red isn't my favorite for me.  I think it looks fine, but it's not something I'm itching to wear everyday and therefore don't know if it should be in my closet.  But thanks to some previous bad shopping habits I bought TWO dresses in this color family a few years ago.  (Darn you, sales!)  I'm all for purging things from my closet, but I take much longer than 30 seconds to decide it.  The hardest is when it's something that's still in great condition and well made but that I just don't reach for in my closet.  Maybe if I had a little online store to sell pieces like this and know they'll land in good hands it will cut down my indecision.  Maybe?  Maybe someday.

  1. I have the one year rule (sometimes the 6 month rule). If I haven't worn it in one year, get rid of it. Sometimes great pieces just have to go if you really will never wear them.

Maybe you should try to sell it though, just so it does go to a good home and you don't feel like it was a total waste to throw it away...

  2. Answer:  forever.  But I keep a bag in my closet full of stuff that's going to be swapped, and that's helped some.

I actually love this color on you--it's rich and deep and makes your skin look all golden and lovely.  Especially with the camel leather!

  3. I know the feeling. In a huff, I got rid of some good stuff- I just wasn't digging it anymore. Is there a way we can host like an online swap? I would GLADLY participate!

  4. I like that dress!! It looks great on you!  And I'm the same way.  I have so many things in my closet that I've had forever, but are in good condition, BUT I never wear them.  I'm pretty sure I'd always rather choose something else than those items, but can't give them up because I feel bad that I didn't get enough use from them.  Dumb?  yes, that sounds dumb!  anyway - I can relate. : )

  5. I love the way you styled that dress.  I say hold on to it a little longer :)

  6. I think your dress looks great!  However, I hear you on the indecision.  I just listed 18 items that I still kinda like on eBay because I just have too many clothes to wear everything in its season and my love of sale shopping was only making it worse.  However, having over $100 in the Paypal account makes the pain easier to bear :-)

  7. I think it's gorgeous on you! Especially with all your cognac. But if you don't like it, get rid of it. I tend to keep things for a long time before letting them go. (Well, depending on what it is.) But I've had many items in my consignment pile and then renewed their life with some remixing possibilities. Or it's a special piece that I only wear at certain times and I get rid of it and then kick myself later. But I weed through my closet about 3 times per year for a real good clean-up.

  8. Maybe you should try a consignment shop? I've never been to one, as there are none in my area, but maybe since it's new-ish and BR, they might give you a little somethin' so you can buy something you truly love! But truthfully, I like this dress on you! In fact, I think you should style it a little more boldly to sell yourself on it. :) Try it with a mustard cardigan or mustard shoes, or any other bold combo.

  9. I've tried a consignment shop with other items and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't take this dress.  The stores in my area are PICKY with girls clothes.  I've styled this dress a few different ways in the past, and this is the first time I've done it with cognac, but I'll give the mustard cardi a shot.  Might be a little too much for me, but who knows?  It's worth a shot!  Thanks :)

  10. YES! I say you do a little Audrey's Closet sale every now and then. :) I have to say, I used to get rid of clothes so quickly and every single time I did, I'd end up missing them, so now it takes me FORever to figure out what to get rid of and what to keep.

  11. Oh man...remixing has made me keep things even LONGER.  Because now I'm like, "Maybe there are going to be new ways I could wear this that I don't know about yet!"  But yeah, it's the feeling of wanting to kick myself for having given something away that makes me keep something for so long.  I have to really, really, really think about it.  I weed out my closet a couple of times a month, but I constantly have my eye on things contemplating whether or not I'm ready to give it away.

  12. That sounds like an excellent idea.  I'll brainstorm a little and see if that's a possibility!

  14. I think it's cute - but when I have purchases I kind of regret like this (good condition, good item, but I don't wear very often because I don't feel awesome in them) I take them to a local consignment shop. Then they can go to someone who likes them more, and I can make a little money back for it (sometimes not much at all, but better than it just sitting in my closet). And then I always make myself vow to make better purchases from now on ;)

  15. I think this outfit is adorable on you! And I love it with the cognac jacket and boots. If it was my size, I'd buy the dress from you. I need something like that in my closet. :-)

  16. I have a hard time with certain pieces too! Even though I haven't worn them in years. And then other pieces, I have no issue getting rid of them. So odd!

  19. the dress is soo cute on you!!! my husband and i had this rule where if we bought 1 new thing, we'd have to donate 2 old things... it never works for me though haha!!

  20. I can't believe how amazingly put together you always look.  You're pretty much my idol in that regard.

As for getting rid of the dress, I think you look lovely in it, but if you don't wear it, then yes, get rid of it.  I used to be the same way about clothes but have gotten a lot better about just letting stuff go if I don't wear it.  I do take longer than 30 seconds, but I've never regretted having gotten rid of something.

  21. I take a really long time to get rid of things. If I definitely don't want it, I can take it to Goodwill, but if I'm not totally sure, I'll move it to the far right of my closet it and leave it there for months. I try to incorporate the stuff into what I usually wear, but most of the time it just sits there until I finally get sick of looking at it, toss it in a bag and off to the donation bin it goes. I would love to put my stuff on a site like Etsy or even just post it on my blog for people to take if they want it, but it seems like a lot of work.

  22. I am the worst at trying to decide... Hence why I have clothes everywhere.  One of these days I will just have to cut the cord and purge without thought.  Someday.

  23. I have come across a few blogs where ladies do online swaps! It takes me a while to get rid of things. Many sit in a "maybe" pile collecting dust for months.

  25. OK, first of all, I love this dress! Don't get rid of it---it's very cute on you!! But, then again, that could be the girl who has a hard time purging the clothes she hasn't worn in a year talking (me...guilty as charged). I try to clean out my closet every time I switch over my summer/winter clothes. This helps a little bit because I'm less attached to the clothes I'm bringing out of storage, since I haven't worn them since the last season.

  26. I am horrible when it comes to getting rid of clothes. Granted before I made the move from USA to Albania, I got rid of 25 large boxes of clothes, shoes, purses and accessories. But I still OWN A TON OF STUFF. There are a few things I look at with a "maybe" clouding my head. My husband doesn't take 30 seconds to decided but he is a lot faster than I am.

I, however, don't think you should have gotten rid of this dress. I think you look adorable in it and that color is flattering next to browns, beiges and especially how you paired it here with Cognac.
