Striped Tee

Top: Target  |  Navy Cardigan:  H&M  |  Pants: Ann Taylor, thrifted  |  Pumps: Target  |  Bag: Old Navy

I've gotten so much mileage out of this basic striped tee.  It's basically a plain white tee made a little more special with stripes.  I find myself constantly reaching for it, recognizing that I can wear it with pretty much anything, and I like how the stripes fill in empty space better than plain white tee.

I haven't even had it that long, but it's already appeared on my young little blog quite a bit:

Evaluating Old Pieces In Your Closet

Top: Charlotte Russe  |  Jeans: Gap  |  Wedges: Target  |  Belt: Forever 21

I'm bringing out the oldies here, peeps.  The day I wore this, my friend said, "Cute.  New shirt?" to which I replied, "Nope.  Had it since college (circa 8 years ago)!"  And recently, two jackets (here and here) that I've had for nearly 10 years are making their way back into rotation.

I've slowly been reworking my closet over the last few months, trying to discover "holes" and key pieces missing from my wardrobe that could make my entire wardrobe more versatile.  Part of that involves evaluating and re-imagining each old piece in my closet to see if it works for what I want my wardrobe to be.  If not, I remove it as it just adds clutter.  I'm not a fan of closet clutter because it clouds my view of the potential that's really in my closet.  Clutter feels like dead weight, and who likes dead weight?

If I can't successfully reimagine a piece to fit my new wardrobe goals, I get it outta there.  Even if I'm unsure about completely getting rid of a piece, I'll at least remove it from my closet to see if I can live without it.

If you're finding extra clutter in your closet and the task of sifting through the mess seems overwhelming, just evaluate one piece per day.  It will only take a few minutes, and your whole closet may not be done, but you'll be one piece closer to a happy closet than you were the day before!

(Wow.  I didn't mean to make this a mini post on how to evaluate your closet, but that's what it turned into.  It's not extensive or even thought-through, but here it is!)

    Patch It Up

    Top: H&M  |  Blazer: H&M  |  Jeans: NY&Co.  |  Wedges: Target

When I first bought this blazer I actually debated about whether or not to keep it, but over the last year I've come to love it.  It's kind of hard not to fall in love with it when 1) it's made of sweatshirt-like material, 2) it has striped lining! and 3) it has elbow patches!!  It kind of makes me want to sew elbow patches onto other blazers.  And maybe a sweatshirt.  And maybe even a striped long sleeved tee.  Because, friends, elbow patches = win.

Guest Post: See My "Ugly Cute" Dress

The lovely ladies Whitney and Monica of Ask the Duplex invited me to write a post on their blog.  If you haven't visited them before, Ask the Duplex provides a great community of virtual roommates for when you don't have real roommates to ask your fashion questions to.  Monica and Whitney are fantastic and I love the concept of Ask the Duplex!

Today I'm asking the roomies at the Duplex about an "ugly cute" dress that I inherited a year ago and have never worn.  To read more and to see my "ugly cute" dress, head on over to the Duplex!

    Okay With Holidays

Top: Target  |  Jacket:  Forever 21  |  Skirt: Buffalo Exchange, Banana Republic  |  Wedges: Target

This may sound silly, but it actually took more courage than usual to put this outfit on.  I have a weird thing about certain color combinations and usually steer clear of them, namely ones that are associated with popular holidays: red and green (Christmas); red, white and blue (US Independence Day); black & orange (Halloween).

Part of having this style blog is to help me break out of weird rules I make in my head, so this outfit is in honor of that.  I don't know what compelled me to do it all in one outfit, but I did it.  Yessir, I did.  Red and green, AND red, white and blue.  BAM.  Take that, Holidays.  I think it turned out okay, yeah?  At the very least, I was clothed and I still love the color of this skirt!

10 Ways to Wear a Plaid Shirt

My younger brother is absolutely obsessed with plaid shirts, and nowadays I can't seem to get enough of them either.  Will you judge me for having two of the same shirt from Old Navy?  Initially I masterfully talked myself out of getting the blue one, but a crazy sale a few months later was too enticing, especially knowing I could get good use out of both of them!  That makes it more okay, right?  :D

(Side note:  I want to call this "gingham" but Wikipedia says otherwise--has to do with the lightness of the fabric.  So, "plaid shirt" it is...but I'd still rather call it gingham.  :D )

Here are 10 ways to wear a shirt like this!

I tried to pull out the basic, general principles for you to easily use as a foundation.  From there you can add your own style and flare by using pieces you already own and by creating your own color combinations.

I also made it all one image so that you can pin it for future reference.

I can't wait to wear these looks when the weather cools.  I hope you won't mind seeing them on the blog again!

    Dressing Down a Pencil Skirt

    Top: Kohl's  |  Corduroy Jacket: Macy's (nearly 10 years ago!)  |  Skirt: Marshall's  |  Belt: Kohl's  |  Shoes: Urban Outfitters (shop)

I've decided that I need to learn how to dress down a pencil skirt.  I'll spare you the many reasons for this so as not to bore you, but I will say that if I don't learn to do this I'll continue to stare longingly at my pencil skirts and never wear them.

So far I've noticed that if the pencil skirt is colored the outfit feels less corporate.  Check.  Easy.  And yesterday I tried making a classic grey pencil skirt more casual by adding a corduroy jacket and some pops of bright colors like red and orange.  I think it worked!  I got several compliments on my outfit, but none of the awkwardly said, "Wow, you're so dressed up..." comments.  I don't know why it took me so long, but I'm relieved to say that I think I found a way to give my pencil skirts some love.  Whew!

**update 12/14/11 - I've now done a more in-depth post on this.  Find it here.

    Coral & Floral

Top: Forever 21  |  Skirt: Loft, thrifted  |  Belt: Forever 21  |  Wedges: Target (shop)  |  Bracelet: Thailand night market

I saw these items together in my laundry pile and thought that pulling out the pinks in the top with a coral skirt was a no brainer.  Almost a little too easy.  So I threw on a striped belt just to keep you on your toes.

Speaking of being on your toes, it looks like I've got my work cut out for me.  My co-worker told me that he took his 5 year old son to lunch and asked his son if he thought any girls were cute.  According to my co-worker, this is how it went:

Kid: Well, there's a girl, Caitlin, who I think is pretty.
    Dad: Okay, who else?
Kids: --gets awkward, sheepish smile on his face and tilts head to side--
Dad: You wanna say Audrey, huh?
Kid: --gets more sheepish and nods yes--
Dad: Mm, of course.  Anyone else?
Kid: And there's another girl in class, Marilyn who has pretty blonde hair, and it's curly.  I like that.
Dad: So girls you think are cute: two girls in your kindergarten class aaannnnd Audrey?
    Kid: --grins and nods--

People, I've got some competition.  You're gonna have to help me step up my game to keep up with these younger girls.

    Weekend Accident

Top: H&M  |  Blazer: Target  (shop)  |  Jeans: Gap  |  Wedges: Old Navy (shop)  |  Cuff: Forever 21

I think it's time for a haircut.  When my haircut grows out and gets too long, the back kind of ducktails out and I have to straighten that section with a flat iron.  If any of you follow me on Twitter you might have noticed that I'm extremely clumsy--running into door frames (not once, but multiple times), and spilling things on myself.  Well, on Saturday I was doing my normal straightening of the ducktail part and instead of grabbing a chunk of my hair with the flat iron, I clamped the flat iron onto my ear and burned off some skin!!  OMG.  Anyway, my ear burned for a while, but now it's scarring and healing, and I think I'll be fine.  But, I definitely need a haircut ASAP so I can stop having to use the flat iron for a while.

    EBEW: Colored Pants

Top: Old Navy (shop)  |  Pants: Ann Taylor, thrifted  |  Grey Pumps: Target  |  Belt: Kohl's

This month's EBEW is colored pants.  Before I started style blogging I didn't own any colored pants, but you can bet now that I'm feenin' for some in green, red, and cobalt blue.  Still not sure if I'm going to get any of them, but I do debate with myself about it a lot.  Skinny green pants sound delicious (that's right, I called pants delicious), but there are other items fighting for what's left in my clothing budget for the year.  I doubt I'm gonna get any, but maybe you can convince me otherwise.  :D

    The Short End

Top: H&M  |  Cropped Jacket: Ross  |  Shorts: Forever 21  |  Wedges: Old Navy (shop)

I'm trying to get myself to wear shorts more often.  I just never want to wear them unless I have to, like if my day involves hiking or sitting on the ground for a long time or anything else that requires me to be unladylike...whatever that means.  Perhaps it's because I'm kind of in love with dresses.  And by "kind of" I mean "extremely."  But if there's one way I can appreciate shorts, it's with a jacket or a blazer.  I love that look, and it's a really simple way to make shorts look cute!

    The Teal Deal

Dress: Target (shop similar)  |  Cardi: Target (shop similar)  |  Wedges: Target (similar)  |  Belt: H&M

Ever since college teal has been one of my favorite colors, but I actually don't have a lot of teal clothing anymore because I was trying to bust out of my teal obsession for the last few years.  Teal, aqua, turquoise.  Almost all the same to me.  Teal was, of course, one of our wedding colors.  Ironically, it took me a long time to decide on that.  Then, when I told everyone that I'd finally decided on wedding colors and named teal in the mix, almost every person who knew me said, "Yeah, of course!  What else would they be?" as if I were so obsessed with teal that I wouldn't have possibly chosen any other color.  Well, I guess they were right.  I tried, I really did, but teal always wins.

For some reason I would have never paired aqua with teal though.  In general, I never used to pair similar shades, but reading style blogs does crazy things to ya.  And I'm likin' it.

    For the Kiddos

Top: Target  |  Vest: Old Navy (shop)  |  Jeans: NY&Co.  |  Wedges: Target (shop)  |  Necklace: Nordstrom

This is one of my kid-friendly outfits.  When I know I'm going to be around kids I definitely avoid silk and other nice fabrics.  I don't know how some moms like Van can wear silk around kids.  You brave, brave souls.

I was eating chips and guacamole with a 3 year old girl.  The little one, full of ambition with eyes bigger than her mouth, scooped her little chip so full of guac that it was overflowing.  "Is your mouth even big enough to chew that?" I asked.  Milking her cuteness, she opened her mouth wide and shoved the chip in as far as it would go.  And yes, she could chew, but only because every time she chewed guac oozed out of her mouth and onto me.  I managed to catch most of the drippings with my hands, but my pants and my shirt also participated.  And that, friends, is why I do not wear silk around kids.

    Blast From the Past

Top: Old Navy  |  Skirt: Loft, thrifted  |  Wedges: Target

SO, on a very random note...this weekend has taken me way back to my high school days.  I've been reflecting on how you just never know where life will take you--or someone else you once knew for that matter.  You see, I was searching through videos of singers on YouTube and stumbled upon a voice that sounded familiar.  I looked at the name and sure enough, it was an acquaintance who I casually used to sing with once in a while just for fun, like 12-13 years ago!  And you know how I stumbled up on his group's videos?  Because he and his group are on tour as backup singers for JUSTIN BIEBER.  Isn't that wild?  Hahahahaha I think it's such a cool thing for him and I'm so happy for him that it just makes me laugh.  It's amazing how much can change in the different seasons of your life.  You never know where you could end up!

    Blue Hues

Maxi dress as skirt: Gift card from Lulu's  |  Tank: Old Navy  |  Denim Jacket: Forever 21  |  Necklace: Nordstrom  |  Wedges: Target

Remember when I won a gift card from Lulu's?  I received my order yesterday, which included this maxi dress, and I'm so in love with it!  (Is it bad that I couldn't wait to wash it before wearing it?)  First of all, it feels like pajamas, and if you've been reading my blog for a bit you should know now that I love dresses (and any other clothes, really) that feel like pajamas: here, here, and here, just to name a few.  I could seriously sleep in this dress.

Secondly, I'd been contemplating getting a maxi dress but I didn't know how much use I could get out of it.  I could think of different ways to remix it, but I kept wondering, "Am I supposed to wear it when it's hot or when it's cold?"  As it turns out, that's perfect for someone like me because I'm easily freezing cold one minute and burning up the next.  Today I feel the cool ocean breeze, but tonight I travel inland and will be lugging around sound equipment and playing at an event--all of which makes for breaking out a sweat.  This maxi dress fit the bill perfectly.  Unfortunately, it's now sold out at Lulu's.  :(
