Evaluating Old Pieces In Your Closet

Top: Charlotte Russe  |  Jeans: Gap  |  Wedges: Target  |  Belt: Forever 21

I'm bringing out the oldies here, peeps.  The day I wore this, my friend said, "Cute.  New shirt?" to which I replied, "Nope.  Had it since college (circa 8 years ago)!"  And recently, two jackets (here and here) that I've had for nearly 10 years are making their way back into rotation.

I've slowly been reworking my closet over the last few months, trying to discover "holes" and key pieces missing from my wardrobe that could make my entire wardrobe more versatile.  Part of that involves evaluating and re-imagining each old piece in my closet to see if it works for what I want my wardrobe to be.  If not, I remove it as it just adds clutter.  I'm not a fan of closet clutter because it clouds my view of the potential that's really in my closet.  Clutter feels like dead weight, and who likes dead weight?

If I can't successfully reimagine a piece to fit my new wardrobe goals, I get it outta there.  Even if I'm unsure about completely getting rid of a piece, I'll at least remove it from my closet to see if I can live without it.

If you're finding extra clutter in your closet and the task of sifting through the mess seems overwhelming, just evaluate one piece per day.  It will only take a few minutes, and your whole closet may not be done, but you'll be one piece closer to a happy closet than you were the day before!

(Wow.  I didn't mean to make this a mini post on how to evaluate your closet, but that's what it turned into.  It's not extensive or even thought-through, but here it is!)

  1. I need to reorganize my closet, again, to figure out what to keep what to get rid off. My closet is packed yet I keep buying more. I went through part of my closet last night and I realized how many pieces haven't been touched this years, pieces I actually love. So I need to "shop" in my own closet. Will see how that goes :)

  2. I love that idea.. evaluate one item a day and eventually it will be less cluttery. That's what I need... -R (DSI)

  3. I definitely think you should bring the oldies out more often! That top looks like it was made for you. I think evaluating piece by piece is a great idea for people who are overwhelmed by the idea of going through their whole closet at once. It can be intense, & one by one is a lot less stressful.

  4. I have definitely been known to re-evaluate clothes in my closet over and over again. I even went back into storage and sorted through the stuff I was supposedly suppose to "give away."

    Guilty. As. Charged. Haha

  5. I do this constantly, haha. I'm impressed that you've had a piece that long. But part of why I don't is because I used to weigh 55 more pounds, so... I kind of purged everything when I decided there was no turning back.

  6. Bringing out the oldies are the best part of having a blog! You are so much better about getting rid of clothes...I still have to work on it...
