The Wonders of a Belt

Day 5 of Kayla's 21 Day Challenge is "belt it."  Gladly, Kayla.

I'm guilty of belting basically everything (scroll down to other posts and you'll see...), but why mess with a good thing?

Let the record show what a simple accessory like a belt can do.

I was in a hurry and needed a comfortable dress for the day.  Brown cotton jersey that I couldn't wrinkle even if I wanted to, check.  Cardigan to counter the chilly morning, (even though it's AUGUST and I live in SAN DIEGO.  C'mon, weather.) Check.

But once the cardi was on, my outfit became sad and droopy:

Quick!  You're running late, Audrey.  Fix it, pronto.  Solution?  Throw on a belt.  Bam.  Stand in amazement that one accessory made you no longer look like you're wearing a sack.  Run out the door.

Dress: NY & Co.  |  Cardigan: H&M  |  Belt: Forever 21  |  Wedges: Target

...and then get asked why you were so "dressed up."  For some reason I often get comments about how "dressed up" I am when I'm just wearing a cotton jersey dress.  Sigh.  (That's where the blog comes in--to connect with people who think wearing a cotton dress is cute, but not abnormal.)  But at least it's nice to know the belt worked in hiding the fact that I frantically just threw this outfit on.

  1. Oh my goodness, I get the "You're so dressed up!" in the cotton dress too!  Umm, no...I'm just insanely comfortable! :D

    Super cute outfit! :)

  2. It's amazing what a belt can do!  I'm learning SO MUCH from lovely ladies like you!  Beautiful!

  3. I love the subtle pattern of the belt. Very pretty.

  4. It really does make ALL the difference in the world! Adds a little texture and shape. And you look fantastic!

  5. I definitely think the belt pulls the outfit together and I love the belt!

I also like the name of your blog!

  6. That has to be my favorite belt of all times. I think it's so funny when people ask why I'm so dressed up, especially when it's a quick and easy outfit...Just goes to show you're doing good! :) I'm a huge fan of that dress too. :)

  7. awesome. agreed it makes a difference!!!

    heart it.

  8. I can't get enough of belting either.  This is probably my second year of the habit and I haven't looked back since.  I'll oftentimes eye my sister's outfits and scrutinize her for not belting, but I've since converted her.  Oh, and I can never get enough of these simple-jersey-dress-outfits!  I love how easy it is to pull off this look and anyone can do it.

  9. You are so right - a belt solves everything. This looks so much cuter with the belt! Haha, I know what you mean. I'm always wearing skirts or dresses and everyone thinks I'm so "dressed up" but really.. I'm just comfy! Skinny jeans look cute but they're soo uncomfortable!! -Rachel (DSI)

  10. Love to belt too!!! I belt t-shirts sometimes even. I get the comments about being dressed up also, but the majority of my clothing items are very casual and comfy, as if I am wearing sweats or jammies 24/7.

Love this outfit, the blue and brown look so pretty together.xo Teresa

  11. People will forever be asking me what I'm dressed up for. They don't get that I just... like to look put together. Around here a typical outfit is jeans, a tee, and flip flops. No thanks.

  12. YEAH.  Same vibe here.  After all, this is San Diego.

  13. Gah, I'm always the most over-dressed person in the room.  But, I have fun with putting outfits together, so I'll stick with it anyway :P

Love this look! I'm guilty of belting everything too so this challenge day was cake for me!

  14. Haha, awwww, your little sad face! The belt does wonders, you're right. Belts are quite possibly the easiest, best, most effective throw on EVER.

So What If I Like Pretty Things

  15. Oh this is too cute. No belt = sad. Belted = ecstatic!

My friends know that "dressing up" is just the way I am, so they've all stopped asking, "Why are you [so] dressed up?"

  16. Isn't that always the way? You spend a stupid amount of time actually trying to get dressed up, and no one notices. But when you spend five minutes and throw yourself together, everyone loves it! I get the same thing here in sunny (except on our August mornings lately) San Diego. I think part of it is that I'm a teacher and the dress code is so laid back that even if I throw on an easy skirt I'm more dressed up. Love your outfits-I get some great ideas here!

  17. Hahah! i love how sad you look wihtout the belt. so cute. ;)

And I'm guilty of belting almost everything.. sometimes even things that do not need belting. Oops.
